After 15 years since its creation, the Bitcoin network has reached a significant milestone by processing its billionth transaction.

This has been confirmed by Clark Moody's Bitcoin dashboard, with the transaction being recorded in block 842,241 at 21:34 UTC on May 5.

The network's first transaction was made on January 3, 2009 by its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Since then, the network has processed an average of 178,475 transactions per day in its 5,603 days of existence.

However, this count does not include transactions made on the Lightning Network.

According to data from the Bitcoin River exchange, the Lightning Network processed around 6.6 million transactions in August 2023 alone.

In April 2020, the network saw a spike in daily transactions due to the launch of the Runes protocol in block 840,000, with a record 926,000 transactions processed on April 23.
