Facebook is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency in the first half of this year, The New York Times reported yesterday.

According to the sources cited by the newspaper, which have preferred to remain anonymous, the social network is in talks with several cryptocurrency exchanges about the possible listing of its new product.

The coin, which will probably be a cryptocurrency pegged to the value of traditional currencies, would be integrated in WhatsApp to allow its users to send money to their contacts through a native cryptocurrency.

As it has been reported, Facebook plans to redesign its messaging infrastructure and integrate its three applications - WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram - making the company's future token accessible to their 2.7 billion monthly users.

Signal and Telegram also plan to roll out their own tokens this year.
