Sony has announced the development of a digital rights management (DRM) platform based on Blockchain.

The system is currently at the prototype stage, but if it is successful, Sony plans to commercialize the platform and open its use to other intellectual property holders. Sony states:

"Today, advances in technologies for digital content creation allow anyone to broadcast and share content, but the rights management of that content is still carried out conventionally by industry organizations or the creators themselves, necessitating a more efficient way of managing and demonstrating ownership of copyright-related information for written works."

The Blockchain-based rights management system is being developed by Sony, Sony Music Entertainment Japan, and Sony Global Education. Sony seeks to integrate Blockchain technology into existing DRM solutions of the company, which were developed for “authenticating, sharing, and rights management of educational data, and additionally features functionality for processing rights-related information.”
