The Regulators' Pioneer Fund is sponsoring a study on Blockchain-based organization and management of phone numbers led by the national telecom regulator Ofcom.

The Regulators' Pioneer Fund said on Friday that it would award about £700,000 ($915,000) to Ofcom, the national telecommunications regulator, “for a project that uses Blockchain technology to improve U.K. phone numbers management.”

Ofcom said that at the moment about 1 billion phone numbers are reserved for UK residents. "We issue blocks of these numbers to telecoms operators, who manage the numbers and movement (porting) of them into and out of their control," it explained.

It seems that the UK intends to move from traditional analog phone lines to the Internet-based infrastructure. Blockchain technology can reduce costs, increase porting efficiency, improve fraud protection, and offer customers a better communication experience.
