Evan Cheng became Director of Engineering, Blockchain on Facebook. He is one of the company's oldest and most experienced engineers. Cheng shared the news about his new position on social media and the information was also confirmed by TechCrunch in the company itself.
The latest reshuffle in Facebook, apparently, indicates that the social network is becoming increasingly serious about blockchain-based developments. This is confirmed by another recent appointment. Former Instagram product vice president Kevin Weil, took over the position of Facebook’s vice president of product, blockchain.
The company's management is interested not only in the distributed ledger technology, but also in cryptocurrencies. Therefore, in January this year the company banned any digital money and ICO advertising on its platform. In June it updated its advertising policy, allowing commercial ads on virtual currencies, but keeping the ban on advertising ICO in effect. There were news in the media that Facebook can acquire Coinbase, the crypto-exchange.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Cheng is a specialist in “low-level” design of computer systems on Facebook and specializes in programming languages for three years. Prior to that, the manager had worked for nearly ten years in Apple, including as a senior manager for “low-level” design. Among his tasks was the development of a compilation technology and other backend engineering.
In addition, Evan Cheng is an adviser to several blockchain projects, including Zilliqa and ChainLink.
Note that earlier in May, the vice president of Facebook Messenger David Marcus, left his post in order to engage in the development and implementation of blockchain solutions within the company.
