The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has a new crypto chief. Valerie Szczepanik was appointed as the new Senior Adviser for Digital Assets to the U.S. government and Associate Director of the Division of Corporation Finance according to the department website.

“I am excited to take on this new role in support of the SEC’s efforts to address digital assets and innovation as it carries out its mission to facilitate capital formation, promote fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and protect investors, particularly Main Street investors.” Valerie Szczepanik said.

Why it is important

  1. SEC is on the frontline battling against the ICO scammers while publishing material aimed at classifying crypto tokens and protection of investors.
  2. The new chief will coordinate activity of all SEC structures that deal with regulation of securities and technologies related to digital assets and innovations, including ICO and crypto-currencies.

Szczepanik has a diploma in law and engineering and has been working in SEC since 1997, most notably being an Assistant Director in the Division of Enforcement’s Cyber Unit. She also co-headed a darkweb working group, and was a member of the FinTeck regulatory body.

A month ago, Szczepanik said that many ICOs are releasing new crypto-currencies before the platforms are fully build which poses a great threat to investors.
